Golfito is the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding natural wonders of the area. These are more off-the-beaten-track attractions since you will not find any large tourist development in the region, making it a perfect destination for those who wish to get away from it all and commune with nature.
Gorgeous beaches like Zancudo and Pavones are within a short drive from Golfito. Zancudo Beach, along with its small hamlet, is a tropical paradise that allows for great relaxation. It is located next to the mouth of the Coto Colorado River, lined with estuaries that harbour a great variety of wildlife.
A bit farther south is Pavones Beach, renown worldwide for its splendid left-breaking, drawn-out waves. The surf here is top-notch, particularly from April to October. Even if you are not a surfing enthusiast, the natural beauty of Pavones, verdant hills blending seamlessly with the soft sand of the beach, makes visiting worthwhile. Both Zancudo and Pavones offer brilliant surfing, warm ocean waters, and great seafood. Nonetheless, if you are looking for something even more isolated, you can follow the road until it ends at Punta Banco. This splendid beach is about as remote and secluded as it can get.
Other natural attractions around Golfito include Piedras Blancas National Park, boasting 34595acres/14000ha of primary rainforest. It is the only lowland tropical forest found in the Golfo Dulce area. Founded by the Austrian government, the region was turned into a national park in the 1990s. It is the home of a great diversity of flora and fauna as well as one of the best places in Costa Rica for bird watching.
