Boca Tapada in the North of Costa Rica, can be found in the Northern Lowlands. It is located near the mouth of the San Carlos River and is just around 15kms/9miles form the border with Nicaragua.

It is a great destination for bird watching and nature hiking in the rainforest.

Throughout the landscape, you can find sugar cane and pineapple plantations, the main economic activity of the area. This is certainly a remote and out-of-the-way destination, boasting a great bio-diversity of both flora and fauna nestled within its rainforests.

  • One of the most important traits of Boca Tapada is that it is one of the last few lingering nesting sites for the endangered Great Green Macaw. The Maquenque National Wildlife Refuge was created with the aim to preserve the habitat of this endangered species. It protects around 150,000 acres (60,702ha) of vital rain forest and wetland habitat.
