Savegre is a valley, surrounded by amazing rainforests with huge oaks and cedars, filled with waterfalls, great trails and the most magical birds.
Located at almost 3000 meters above sea level (Almost 12,000 feet high), Savegre is one of the main destinations for nature lovers, hikers and birdwatchers.
The cloud forest of Savegre has been acclaimed by birdwatchers as the best place in the country to see the Resplendent Quetzal all year round as in other forests throughout Costa Rica the quetzal is seen only on a seasonal basis.
Additionally, more than 200 species of birds have been spotted in Savegre, making the region a bird watcher’s paradise. There are several bird watching tour options available, leading you down hiking trails and into the marvelous cloud forest filled with exotic flora.
It also depicts the most magical hotels, either Savegre Hotel Nature Reserve and Spa, or Trogon Lodge or Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge, each in their own particular style, they have gorgeous gardens, beautiful rooms and fantastic forest views.
Talk a little about the Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno):
The name “quetzal” is from Nahuatl quetzalli [keˈt͡salːi], “large brilliant tail feather” (American Audubon Dictionary) or “tail coverts of the quetzal” ( Merriam–Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary), from the Nahuatl root quetz = “stand up” used to refer to an upstanding plume of feathers.
Pharomachrus is from Ancient Greek pharos, “mantle”, and makros, “long”, referring to the wing and tail coverts of the resplendent quetzal (the second h is unexplained).
Quetzalcoatl was the main god of the Mesoamerican culture. He was believed to have created Earth and humans. And the symbol of the feather serpent is connected to the long feathers of the quetzal and the way it flies through the forest.
The feather serpent symbolizes the being that goes from the serpent (The lowest being) getting enlightened into a gorgeous bird.
Important to know when going into Savegre:
- It gets chilly… And I mean chilly-cold! It can turn 40° F (8° C) easily so, it is quite important to be prepared for this sort of weather.
- There are some great hikes! But! Remember it is high above sea level. So take your breath and learn to walk at this height (Where you have to stop every now and then to catch your breath).
