Domestic Flights in Costa Rica

In Camino Travel, besides arranging your reservations, we recommend you the best domestic flight options, depending on the area you want to travel and the connections you must make to arrive at your destination.

The domestic or local flights are a comfortable alternative to avoid some long distance driving. To fly within Costa Rica is easy and practical. The daily programmed flights travel to more than 12 tourism destinations within the country, and to the main towns and cities such as Tamarindo and Quepos. There might be up to 6 flights to San José during the day. Most flights leave and arrive in San José, the country's capital city, nevertheless, also there are special charter flights and the inter-destination flights are available upon request. The airplanes include: Islander (with capacity for 8 people), Let (with capacity for 15 people), the Cessna Grand Caravan 208 (with capacity for 12 people), and the Twin Otter Visitaliner (with capacity for 19 people). The Cessna 204 airplanes (capacity for 4 people) are used from time to time for charter flights or flights with few passengers.

Important Considerations to plan your domestic flight:

• Check-in time at local airports is 45 minutes before flight departure.
• It allows adults and children to occupy one seat and carry a maximum of 25 pounds (12 kg) luggage per person, including a personal small suitcase and camera equipment. Excess luggage is charged by pound and it is transported depending on the airplane’s weight capacity. We recommend you to plan your trip in advance and bring an additional piece of luggage that you can locked and leave at the storage room in your hotel in San José.
• Big size articles transportation, such as surf boards, windsurf equipment, bicycles and others, are subject to space availability and it implies an additional charge.
• Inter-destination flights (between different regions of Costa Rica that do not imply departing or arriving in San José) are available and they operate all year round. National air regulations require the client’s complete name (full name) when flying with local airlines.
• Please, provide this information when requesting your flight reservations.
• The places with airport infrastructure are located in San José (Central Valley, Juan Santamaría International Airport and the Domestic Airport Tobías Bolaños) and Liberia (North Pacific, Daniel Oduber International Airport). The other cities and towns have runways for arrivals and departures; some have an office and restrooms near the runway, but in other places there is only the required runway.
• Unused tickets are not refundable and they cannot be endorsed.
• Due to the changing weather conditions and unexpected delays, we recommend you not to program your domestic flight the same day of your international flight (unless your international flight departs rather late, to allow you to be on time at the airport).
• An ideal formula for your trip is to combine a car rental and one or several domestic flights! For an additional cost (and in some tourism places, at no extra cost), we can organize that you return your rented car outside San José or Liberia, and fly to other destinations within Costa Rica.  Contact us for further suggestions!
