CAR RENTAL
(Four-wheel, Standard vehicles, Insurances, For your safety )
In Camino Travel, we care to select the best suppliers to rent a car and thus guarantee that the vehicles provided are in excellent conditions. On top of that, the rental companies we do business with also include the necessary insurance and documents. With this in mind, we also reserve and coordinate the place and time to deliver your car, making it a whole lot easier to plan your vacation.
Traveling using a rented car offers the freedom to explore the country at your own pace. Nonetheless, you may need some patience while driving in Costa Rica since some of the roads aren’t in very good condition and road signals can be very basic in certain areas. Despite these slight setbacks, you will be able to explore local routes in the countryside and live the adventure of discovering gorgeous landscapes while driving through the different regions of the Costa Rica
If you are an adventurous person and you are going to drive through steep mountainous roads or areas without paving, what you need is a 4 wheel drive vehicle (4x4). On the other hand, if you are driving only through the main highways to places such as the Arenal Region (La Fortuna), North Pacific beaches or Manuel Antonio (Central Pacific), then you can use a regular car, which is cheaper.
Most car rental companies in Costa Rica offer manual transmission cars. You can also find automatic transmission cars but in less amount. Make sure you inform us ahead of time if you need an automatic car, this way we can request it with enough time.

The vehicles are delivered directly and picked up at your hotel. Additional charges for delivery apply when the car is received or it is returned in remote areas outside San José. It is also important to consider that some vehicles use diesel instead of gasoline. Therefore it is advisable to ask your car rental representative when you receive the car.
Requirements when renting a car
in Costa Rica:
- A valid driver's license and passport are mandatory
- A valid credit card (debit cards are not accepted) is absolutely necessary to rent any car
-
Minimum rental age is 21 to 23 years depending on the rental company
- The use of rented cars is limited to the Costa Rican territory: you cannot cross the border in a rented car
-
In Costa Rica, you drive on the right side of the road
- You must return the car with a full gas tank
Insurance
Standard insurance is mandatory and it is charged per day. The Collision Damage Waiver coverage is an insurance against robbery and responsibility; it covers the total costs except the deductible (guarantee deposit). The insurance company will not cover the damages and third party liabilities when the amount is inferior to the deductible quota ($750 - $1500); you must cover these expenses. The obligation to third party liabilities or third party properties will depend on the vehicle renting policy but a 20% deductible for damages and third party damages applies, even for total coverage insurance. Flat tires are not covered by any insurance nor are any accidents caused by the driver's negligence (for instance while driving under the effects of alcohol).
For your safety
- Always keep your vehicle doors locked.
- Do not leave any luggage or valuable objects inside the car
- If you feel you are lost, drive to the nearest public place (gas station, restaurant) and ask for assistance
-
If you have a flat tire, drive to the nearest public place
- Have a copy of your passport with you
- Do not stop if a stranger requests it. If a transit official stops you, first request for him to show you his official identification before offering any information
- Try to park your vehicle in well lit parking lots, you may have to pay but your car will be safe
