More than 25% of Costa
Rica’s territory corresponds to protected areas. Being
a tropical land, its immense forests impress travelers for
the trees’ height and width, and for the wildlife diversity.
More than 850 species of birds, 230 mammal species (50% live
in the trees), 235 species of reptiles, 180 species of amphibians,
and 130 types of fish, are sheltered in the different national
parks and biological reserves.
The National Park
System is a governmental initiative created in the mid 1970’s
as an effort to avoid log-cutters, hunters, cattle-ranchers
and industrial farmers from incurring in massive deforestation.
In recent years, new private reserves and other protected
areas have been founded, increasing the lands dedicated to
biological conservation. Some of these areas offer camping
service, and few even have small, basic lodging options. The
money collected is used for infrastructure maintenance and
ranger wages. In order to run these places in a sustainable
way, the number of daily visitors to most parks is limited;
so make sure you contact us in advance to inquire for space
availability.
