Arenal Volcano area
Without a doubt, the
majestic Arenal Volcano -one of the most active volcanoes
in the Western Hemisphere- constitutes the main attraction
in this northern region. Its perfect-formed cone and constant
eruptions of lava impress visitors from all over the world.
Arenal also owes its reputation to the wide variety of activities
and interesting natural spots within a short distance of one
another. Located in the northern part of the Alajuela province,
close to the Nicaraguan border, the Arenal region possesses
beautiful and varied scenery. Refreshed by gentle tropical
rains, this land stays green and humid almost all year round.
The lowlands host gushing rivers, hot springs, lagoons, remote
national parks, and plentiful wildlife. Their climate and
terrain also provide perfect conditions for agriculture -
some of the most advanced in the country. Caño Negro
Wildlife Refuge protects a large variety of bird species,
both migrating and resident, that gather in the refuge. This
is also home to a significant number of endangered mammals
and reptile species, including crocodiles, turtles, monkeys,
and tapirs, among others. Its natural waterways and damp areas
are unique in the country and provide the key ecosystem for
all its wildlife. Caño Negro Refuge is adjacent to
Los Chiles, near the Nicaraguan border (an estimated 2-hour
drive away from La Fortuna).
