NORTH PACIFIC

(Rincón de la Vieja, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Samara)

Best known for its luxurious beaches, which indeed are astonishing, the truth is that Costa Rica’s North Pacific, comprising practically the entire province of Guanacaste and part of Puntarenas, has much more to offer than palm trees and ocean waters. Aside from its unique tropical dry forests filled with, open prairie-like spaces, an active volcano, geysers, boiling mud pots, old haciendas, cattle ranches, and sabaneros (the Costa Rican version of cowboys), the region of Guanacaste is marked by a unique history (independent from Costa Rica until 1824) replete with folklore and traditions that have been adopted as icons of Costa Rican typical culture. Birding sites, national parks, homemade tortillas, and local arts are daily expressions of the region’s diversity, but of course, when it comes to the North Pacific, beaches are a “must”... and there is one for every type of traveler. Big, luxurious resorts on the Papagayo Gulf, boutique hotels in remote hideaways like Tamarindo, Punta Islita, and Flamingo, kilometers of unspoiled beaches between Nosara and Sámara, and towns with an alternative, “retro-style” atmosphere, like Mal País and Montezuma, all mark the North Pacific.

RINCÓN DE LA VIEJA VOLCANO AREA

The surroundings of the Rincón de la Vieja National Park, in the northern region of Guanacaste Province, are one of the most particular in the country. Combining tropical dry forest with enchanting waterfalls, the area is characterized by bubbling mud pots, steaming vents in the earth, hot springs, and a whole host of wildlife. Still relatively undiscovered, the region is starting to attract more visitors.

TAMARINDO

In Guanacaste, the sun rules. Cool winds from northern latitudes lower temperatures pleasantly along the coast from December to April. From May through November the warm and sunny weather prevails, although occasional showers may accompany it, usually in the afternoon. Tamarindo beach is part of this privileged area. It stretches for a couple of kilometers over a series of rocky headlands. Tamarindo boasts an impressive selection of restaurants, wide-ranging accommodations, a lively beach culture, and a vibrant nightlife.

FLAMINGO

Flamingo is a beautiful white sand beach. Flamingo has been developed for sport fishing and boating and it is one of the most exclusive beaches in Costa Rica, boasting the largest harbour in the country.

SAMARA

Samara is great for sheer size and safe swimming and is a great place to relax and to enjoy sunbathing. The waves break on a reef about a kilometer out, so the water near the shore is actually quite calm - a rarity on the Pacific Coast.
