RURALTOURISM
Keköldi
Even though what remains of the indigenous cultures of Costa Rica is very sparse, the lives of the surviving groups can be best observed by visiting this aboriginal reserve nestled in the breathtaking Talamanca mountain range. Due to the constant encroachment of modernity, the boom of tourism and the industrial conquest, Costa Rica’s natural environment and indigenous traditions have been increasingly marginalized and are now forced to exist in the fringes. In an attempt to provide a sanctuary and to protect indigenous culture from agriculture and the pressures of modern economy, Kekoldi Reserve was created in 1976.
Once you arrive at the reserve, you will be welcomed by the Kekoldi Wak ka Koneke Association. You will learn more about their sustainable traditions, about their mythology and unique history, and will receive more detailed information in regards to their local conservation efforts.
The Reserve offers a day and half long tour involving walking and cultural activities. You will travel through the lusciously beautiful region of Talamanca, home of Costa Rica’s largest indigenous population. You will enjoy the natural jewels of the area and learn how the mountain’s elements help to sustain the cultural traditions of the Bribri and Cabecar tribes. The tour also takes its participants through a visit of the current conservation projects to protect the green iguana, an endangered native species of the region.
