RURALTOURISM
Chira Island
This island is located in the upper end of the Gulf of Nicoya, on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. It is the second largest island in the country and boasts the most intact biodiversity of Tropical Dry Forest flora of Central America. Three main villages make up the main population of the island, located to its north. The entire east region of Chira is made up of extensive mangrove swamps.
During this tour, you will take a boat ride down the canals of this impressive mangrove forest, the home of 5 of the 7 mangrove species that can be found in Costa Rica. You will get the chance to witness and learn about the artisan fishing practices of the island’s inhabitants. Additionally, a visit to Paloma Island can also be arranged, this being a renowned sanctuary for aquatic birds. Once at Chira Island, you can take a bike ride to La Amistad Lodge, where lunch will be waiting to be served. While enjoying your meal, you will get the chance to interact with Chira Island Women's Association, those in charge of the conservation projects of the island.
