This tour will take you to the heart of an indigenous community of the Bribri tribe, one of the surviving ethnic groups in Costa Rica. By visiting the reserve located in the region of Talamanca, you will get to experience and learn about Bribri daily way of life by visiting one of their schools and later on embarking on a nature walk through the village’s surrounding territory. During this walk you will be introduced to the use of medicinal plants and crops.
The tour begins in Bambu, the indigenous reserve’s nearest commercial town. Here, you local guide will be waiting for you to begin the tour. From Bambu, you will go for a one hour boat ride down the Yorkin River, travelling in a traditional Bribri canoe. During the ride, you will get to observe the flourishing tropical vegetation on the Costa Rican and Panamanian sides of the river. When you reach the Yorkin’s indigenous territory, you will head on towards the local school where you will get the chance to listen to the children singing in the Bribri language. Afterwards, you will continue onwards to the organic cocoa and banana plantations in the company of a local Bribri guide, who will interpret the trail according to indigenous traditions and perspectives.
During the final phase of the tour, you will make a visit to Stibrawpa Women’s Lodge (Bribri for ‘women’s house’), an eco-lodge located on the banks of the Yorkin River. Here, you will learn about the purpose of the lodge and its organization in regards to the preservation of Bribri cultural heritage. The tour ends with a guided nature walk, exploring the surroundings and learning about th local trees, medicinal plants and the community’s crops. Before returning, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional Bribri meal.
