National Theatre

Teatro Nacional, built in 1890, may be seen as the cultural center of San Jose as it hosts operas, ballets, concerts, poetry readings and other cultural events. As well as bringing culture to the masses, it also is one of the most impressive architectural works in San Jose. As elegant as it is from the outside, the inside of the building is even more interesting with many of Costa Rica's 19th century paintings. Also the marble staircases, gilded ceilings, and parquet floors made of local hard woods are worth seeing.
