Gold Museum
Costa Rica's Gold Museum (Museo de Oro) is located below Plaza de la Cultura (Culture Plaza) in the middle of San José; its exhibit rooms make up a large basement hidden underneath the streets of the city. It is part of a complex of museums operated by the Costa Rican Central Bank. The museum's vaults display one of the best collections of pre-Colonial art in the whole country; these include 2300 pieces of gold, jewelry, armored plates and different objects of religious devotion. The Numismatic Museum, which showcases the evolution of Costa Rica's coins and bills starting from 1502 to the present, is also operated by the Costa Rican Central Bank and is located right next to the Gold Museum. This underground complex also has two special rooms in which various exhibits are hosted throughout the year.
