Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo area

Less than two decades ago Puerto Viejo could hardly be called a town. It has changed considerably since then, but the beaches are still free (no fees), the surf can be downright awesome, and everyone appears to be in a state of tropical bliss, enjoying the hammock culture in full swing. The culture in this area is completely different from the rest of the country; the Afro-Caribbean influence is reflected in the music, food and laid-back lifestyle. If you visit the South Caribbean be sure to try the rice and beans - the most popular dish in this area. Sights and activities in this picturesque area include Cahuita National Park, Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife refugee, Punta Uva, Talamanca, Kekoldi Indian Reserve. Activities such as hiking, snorkelling, horseback riding, swimming and kayaking are also available.
