Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo area

Less than a decade ago Puerto Viejo could hardly be called a town. It has changed considerably since then but the beaches are still breathtakingly beautiful, the surf can be downright awesome and everyone appears to be in a state of tropical bliss, enjoying the hammock culture in full swing. The culture in this area is completely different from the rest of the Costa Rica; the Afro-Caribbean influence is reflected in the music, food and laid-back lifestyle.
Additionally, Cahuita National Park is one of the most gorgeous regions of the country. The vivid coral reef of this park is the home a large number of fauna and flora diversity; you will be able to find around 123 different species of fish, 44 species of crustaceans, 140 of species shellfish, 128 algae species and 35 species of corals.
If you visit the South Caribbean, be sure to try the rice and beans - the most popular dish in this area. Also, activities such as hiking, snorkeling, horseback riding, swimming and kayaking are available, so make sure you try them out!
