SOFT ADVENTURE
HORSEBACK RIDING
Take a ride on the back of a horse through Costa Rica’s cloud forests, tropical dry forests, and rain forests. You can participate in this activity almost everywhere in Costa Rica. During your horseback ride you will follow well-marked, safe trails that take you through some of the country’s most beautiful and remote lands. If tropical dry forests are of your interest, then you should try horseback riding through Rincon de la Vieja National Park. However, if you’re interested in cloud forests and rainforests, Camino Travel recommends the areas of Monteverde, Dominical-Nauyaca Waterfalls and Arenal for your horseback ride.
LA FORTUNA WATERFALL: This unforgettable adventure consists of a 1 ½ hour horseback ride through the beautiful countryside. You will then dismount for a short hike through the forest, arriving at the base of a magnificent waterfall; there, a refreshing natural pool of pristine waters awaits you. After you have enjoyed your time in the pool and waterfall, you will return to your hotel. The entire tour lasts around 4 hours and is recommended for visitors in relatively good physical condition due to the demanding hike and horseback ride.
SARAPIQUÍ: Hacienda Pozo Azul is a 2000-acre family ranch (located in La Virgen de Sarapiquí) that has been turned into an adventure center for visitors. When you arrive at the hacienda, your guide will take you to the stalls where he/she will give you the necessary equipment and will assign a horse to you according to your level of experience. Also, he/she will explain the basics of horseback riding, especially for those with little or no experience with horses. You will start riding through cattle pastures, regenerating land and patches of forest. With Sarapiquí being one of the best places in our Costa Rica for birdwatching, there is always a high possibility of spotting wildlife during the ride. The tour ends back at the stalls after enjoying a relaxing time in the presence of nature.
RINCÓN DE LA VIEJA: This national park was created to protect the biodiversity around the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano area. It covers over 14083 hectares of semi-deciduous forest and includes a barren rocky terrain of altitudes that range from 1950 feet to 5748 feet above the sea level; the park’s extension includes areas on the Caribbean and Pacific sides of the Guanacaste Volcanic Mountain Range. Led by an expert guide, visitors will explore this national park’s surrounding primary forest on horseback while enjoying beautiful views of the volcano. The ride will lead visitors through the park to Laguna Azul, a blue lagoon with a refreshing cascade where sulphur warm water mingles with cold fresh water. During the tour you will have the opportunity to spot a large diversity of flora and fauna and can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes.
