ADRENALINE ADVENTURE
CAVING/ SPELUNKING
Explore the mysterious world of caves with a guide and equipment. This dark environment hosts an array of unique wildlife. A cave is a natural hollow passage under or into the earth that has an exit at the earth’s surface. During a tour into the caves you will find marine fossils, and also bats, spiders and crickets. Limestone rocks, stalactites, stalagmites and corals, form most of the caves. The underground river forms these whimsical stone formations. To go spelunking you need a place with interesting caves, and one of Costa Rica’s best is the Venado cave in the Arenal area.
VENADO CAVE TOUR: Approximately 2 miles (3 km) from the town of Venado, you will reach the entrance of these caves, which were discovered in 1962. Upon arrival, you will be given a helmet and flashlight, and then, walk down a hill to the entrance of the caves. You will experience this wet, underground world for about 1½ hours, where you will have the chance to appreciate different mineral formations. Despite the darkness and the humidity, there is also life in this environment: insects, spiders and bats are to be encountered. Once out of the caves, you will hike up the hill again. After some time to shower and change, you will be transported back to your hotel.
