CENTRAL VALLEY - ACTIVITIES

POÁS VOLCANO: The impressive, active Poás Volcano has one of the largest craters in the world (1.5 Km /0.94 miles in diameter), and of intense light blue – turquoise colors. Besides walking to the crater’s sightseeing point, you may also wish to wander through the cloud forest to the nearby Botos, a former crater which today is a picturesque lagoon. On clear days you might even be able to appreciate the magnificent view of the Northern Lowlands. Combine this tour with a visit to the towns of Sarchí (famous for its local art crafts), or the La Paz Waterfall Gardens (with scenic views and a butterfly farm)!

LA PAZ WATERFALL GARDEN: Located within the transitional forests between the Central Valley Mountain Range and the Northern Lowlands, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens hosts a wide variety of plants and bird life amongst stunning scenery. Visitors are invited to walk along the trails towards some beautiful waterfalls, as well as to an orchid garden & hummingbird and butterfly gallery that simulates their natural habitat. On clear days, there are marvelous views of the Poás Volcano.

 

COFFEE TOUR: A very different way of observing the coffee production process (from planting to exporting), this tour begins at a coffee plantation. There, you will learn the history of what became the most relevant economic product in the country from the 1840’s to the 1980’s. You will also learn about how coffee is processed up until the final stages of preparation prior to packaging. And to complete this whole experience, you will participate in a tasting session, where the taste of coffee will certainly linger!

WHITEWATER RAFTING PACUARE: For a wild and wet day, weave and dive your way through one of the best white water rivers in the world (Class III-IV). After a scenic drive along the countryside, you will reach the river’s “put-in”, where you will receive your equipment (helmets, life jackets and paddles). After the safety orientation talk, you will start your exciting journey along the river, surrounded by amazing wild scenery the whole way. Breakfast and a light lunch are included, as well as roundtrip transportation and equipment.

WHITEWATER RAFTING SARAPIQUÍ: This low-volume river (Class II-III) is ideal for whitewater novices, as well as for families, who will all, enjoy these moderately flowing rapids, interspersed with tranquil stretches. The journey is also excellent for bird watchers and nature lovers. The length of the trip down the river is approximately 9 miles / 14.4 km.

CITY TOUR: This half-day cultural tour has been designed to offer visitors a first glance at its capital city, San José. The journey includes visits to the National Theatre (built in 1897), the National Museum (a former army’s fortress), historical neighborhoods, and the town of Moravia, ideal for purchasing all sorts of souvenirs made of leather, wood, ceramic, and other materials.

IRAZÚ-LANKASTER-OROSI: This full day tour combines the Irazú Volcano with a visit to the Lankaster Gardens, where an impressive variety of orchids and a colorful display of tropical plants may be appreciated. In the lush green valley of Orosi (the site of the country’s first Spanish settlement), you will have the chance to visit the colonial church and monastery built in 1742 and the ruins of Ujarrás, the second church to be built in Costa Rica. Lunch may be included upon request.

RAINFOREST AERIAL TRAM: Located just 50 minutes away from San José – adjacent to the Braulio Carrillo National Park – the Aerial Tram permits its visitors to enjoy a unique ecosystem through the rainforest’s canopy (upper tree levels that host an amazing variety of wildlife – some of which hardly descends to the ground). ARENAL VOLCANO & HOTSPRINGS BY NIGHT: Experience the power of nature in its entire splendor at the most active volcano in Costa Rica. This noon-to-midnight tour takes you to the Tabacón or Baldí Hot Springs, and the Arenal Volcano itself, where you may get to see the near-perfect cone ejecting incandescent rocks high up into the air and listen to underground rumblings. Arenal by night is undoubtedly one of the most wanted tours.

CANOPY ADVENTURE - SAN JOSÉ DE LA MONTAÑA:The Canopy Adventure is located at San Jose de la Montaña, only 45 minutes from San Jose, in the mountainous forests area is bordered by two national parks, Braulio Carrillo and Barva Volcano, and it’s a home for an abundant population of birds and wildlife. This is the tour that lets you roam around the treetops, giving you a “Birds Eye View” of the tropical forest. Leap from platform to platform on the special system of steel cables with the use of professional climbing gear. (Designed with your safety at the forefront). This canopy tour has 13 platforms, and 11 of these are suspended around gigantic oak trees, typical to old growth jungles. The cables used in the zip lining activity are galvanized stainless steel. The length of these go anywhere from 60 to 600 feet, and most of them are suspended on the canopy and go over beautiful waterfalls. TORTUGA ISLAND: Glide through the calm waters of the island-studded Gulf of Nicoya on the Pacific Coast on the two-deck cruise ship. Early in the morning, you will be picked up at your hotel in San José (this does not apply for all hotels). Along the way towards the coast you will enjoy the view of sugar cane plantations, and lush vegetation. Once in the peer, your cruise ship will take you on a 1h45 boat ride towards the white-sand beaches of the Tortuga Island. The ship offers bar service on board. Enjoy snorkeling and swimming; a delicious buffet lunch is served under the shade of palm trees on Tortuga Island.

SARCHÍ: The picturesque village of Sarchí, known as the cradle of Costa Rica’s craftsmanship is home to the traditional colorful painted oxcarts. This is the ideal place for shopping for local souvenirs made out of wood, leather, ceramic and other rustic materials hand made and hand painted by local artisans. There are a number of factories open for tourists to observe the craftsmanship involved in traditional artisan crafts such as ox-carts.
